That’s why he wants to serve the area as member of the House of Assembly for the district of Stephenville–Port au Port. He was announced candidate for the Liberal party following a vote on Wednesday.

Finn credits his parents, Mike and Rosemary Finn, with teaching him the importance of community service. That’s why, in addition to his full-time employment, he volunteers whenever possible.

He said whether through volunteering or career choices, he’s always understood the importance of giving to the community.

Finn has been employed by the Community Education Network in Stephenville since 2008 and as an employment counsellor for three and a half years, dealt with the social and economic difficulties shaping the region. He said he has seen the struggle of individuals and families trying to earn and secure stable futures.

In 2011 he became the area’s Housing Support Worker with the Community Education Network and has been assisting and continues to assist individuals and families who are homeless or experiencing housing instability.

Politics has been a continuing passion throughout his life, first as student council president in high school and the same position at the College of the North Atlantic with the Community Studies Students Association.

In 2013, Finn became one of the youngest candidates ever elected to Stephenville council and is a member of the town’s finance, leisure and recreation, beautification, personnel and cemetery committees.

He said stepping into provincial politics will allow him to continue serving the community in the district. It’s also in his blood, as his grandfather, Michael McCarthy of Lourdes, represented the Port au Port District at the national convention in 1948.

Finn said after working in and with government he’s aware of the strengths needed to protect the area and the challenges that have to be overcome.
