Razoolies in Stephenville could soon be taking on different role altogether.
The Stephenville town council gave outline planning permission to 10503 Newfoundland Ltd., trading as Callahan’s Contracting, to convert the nightclub at 120 Carolina Ave. into 10 one-room efficiency units.
The development still has to return to council for permit approval, but the approval on Thursday gives the company the opportunity to proceed with its planning.
The building was the former Airmen’s Open Mess when it was originally built on the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base.
Mayor Tom Rose said it is interesting to see that type of development, especially since, with higher costs for everything from heating to electricity, many people are downsizing.
“Costs are big concerns and not everyone wants to live in a 2,000- to 3,000-square-foot home anymore,” he said.
Rose said that’s why there are markets today for things like efficiency units and tiny homes.
