Bob Bennett had full intentions of getting tickets to some of the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada events happening in Corner Brook this week.
When the Lark Harbour resident found himself, along with hundreds of others, cut off from the city by a washed-out highway earlier this week, he became concerned he might not get to any events.
Those worries dissipated when his daughter Sophie told him there was a message on their answering machine, advising Bennett he was the winner of The Western Star’s Hockey Day in Canada prize pack promotional contest.
The prize package consisted of two passes to a number of the special events, including the opening ceremonies at Marble Mountain, a VIP skate with the Stanley Cup, breakfast with the Stanley Cup, the alumni game between NHL stars and former Corner Brook Royals and the kitchen party that followed, along with today’s major midget hockey game and senior hockey game between the Royals and Stephenville Jets.
Before winning the prize, Bennett was hoping he would at least get tickets to some of Saturday’s festivities.
“I was overwhelmed and quite pleased we were able to attend the events,” he said after Friday morning’s breakfast festivities.
“I had heard tickets were getting a bit low and we were worried we weren’t going to get any. So it worked out good.”
Bennett’s big concern then was how to fairly share the prize with his six-year-old triplets. They drew straws with Jack getting to skate with the Stanley Cup, Sophie going to the breakfast and Max taking in a hockey game.
