Inside the friendly confines of Corner Brook’s high school, there appears to be some creative business minds at work.
Two senior teams from Corner Book High displayed their business savvy in fine style at the 2018 Skills Canada provincial dragon’s lair held this past weekend at the College of the North Atlantic Prince Phillip Drive Campus in St. John’s.
An event held in partnership with the Community Business Development Corporation, the lair’s den is a new initiative used to promote an entrepreneurial spirit to young minds from coast to coast.
Madison Dicks, Jessie Lawrence and Vinn Elliott won the gold medal for Screw the Mainstream, an ‘outside the box’ co-op clothing line that’s not readily available in retail outlets that gives people a chance to have a say in the style and designs of the product line.
Blissly, a business concept that offered a short-term respite care service to the elderly, won the bronze medal with the team consisting of Emily Pittman, Angela Fisher, Blair Curtis, Rebecca Sandor and Kim Grady.
Madison Dicks was pretty pumped about winning the gold medal because her group had no idea what they were getting into when they went to the competition.
Initially, representatives were suppose to go to the high school and explain to the team what is expected at the lair’s den, but that never materialized so they went into it not really having a clue what would happen.
Once it became clear that they had to collectively come up with a new business concept the energy began to flow and within an hour they had come up with the co-op clothing line as their business idea.
“I think it actually helped our creativity a little more,” Dicks said of being unaware of what was in store for the team. “We did it in less than an hour so that was pretty cool,” she said.
It was a fun time for them, but it certainly was exciting when it was revealed they had won the gold medal.
“We were really excited oh my God,” Dicks said Friday morning. “It was pretty crazy. We were thinking once we got into the final three maybe we will get third because all the ideas were amazing so were surprised and feeling a sigh of relief.”
