The collision occurred on Main Street near the intersection with Veterans Road.
The boy was a student at Long Range Academy and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has a crisis response team, including guidance and educational psychologists, in place at the school.
In a statement released late Monday afternoon the district said the school is open as a resource and support for the school community.
The district also said is it saddened by the loss of the student.
“Obviously this is a very difficult time for the school community and the thoughts of everyone in our education system are with the family and friends of the student,” reads the statement.
Out of respect for the family and friends of the boy, the district said it will not be providing any other information and deferred questions to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
A media release from the Rocky Harbour detachment said police responded to the call of the collision at approximately 8:30 a.m.
An RCMP traffic analyst has attended the scene and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
