Big Brother Canada houseguest Danielle Alexander of Fort McMurray, Alta. has relatives in Bay St. George. Alexander's grandmother Linda Alexander lives in Kippens, and her grandfather Carl Walsh lives in Boswarlos.

Alexander is the 20-year-old resident of Fort McMurray, Alta., who has ties to people in the Bay St. George area.

“I was so shocked when I realized I was being evicted, mainly because I didn’t think I was being a threat. I’m an open and honest person by nature and I guess my biggest mistake was kind of forgetting at times that this was a competition,” she said in a telephone interview from her home in Fort McMurray on Wednesday.

Alexander, who is a student and aspiring actress, said almost all of the houseguests voted against her, which made it a really emotional experience.

“Being in the house was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be and was very mentally draining,” she said.

While the first couple of days passed quickly for her, the two weeks that she was inside ended up feeling like a month. That’s because houseguests didn’t know the time of day and for her things like analyzing the moves of other people in the house got confusing.

But overall, Alexander said being involved was a lot of fun and something she will probably never have the opportunity to do again. She felt blessed to get there in the first place because she was one of 15 selected to participate in the reality show from a pool of 10,000 people across the country that auditioned.

The Big Brother Canada house is not actually a house, according to Alexander, saying it’s actually a set built inside a large warehouse. She thought it would be an actual house, but said that’s not to take away from it as inside it’s beautiful, the houseguests were treated well and the facilities are quite comfortable.

“They even made a backyard for us to feel like we were outside,” she said.

Since being evicted, she spent a day doing prep work and interviews and then was flown back to her hometown of Fort McMurray. She is now busy trying to land an acting job, doing auditions and hopefully will find something else. Where there was no outside contact to family or friends permitted from inside the house, since getting out Alexander has learned of the support and people rooting for her, including her family members in Newfoundland.

“I really appreciate the support and hopefully I represented them well. If there is one thing I did while being in the house, it was being true to myself,” she said.

While Alexander grew up in Fort McMurray, her father Dan Alexander is from Kippens and her mother Lisa Walsh, is from Port au Port. She has a grandmother, Linda Alexander, living in Kippens and a grandfather Carl Walsh, living in Boswarlos on the Port au Port Peninsula.

Alexander is hoping to make a trip to Newfoundland soon and visiting her relatives as well as some friends in Birchy Bay, then make her way to St. John’s.

“I miss my family in Newfoundland. I love them and thank them for supporting me in this process.”
