Dean William Joyce was ordered to stand trial in a decision rendered Monday by Judge Kymil Howe at provincial court in Corner Brook.
Her decision followed the hearing of a preliminary inquiry to weigh the evidence against Joyce to see if it merited going to trial.
Joyce is accused of one count of fraud over $5,000 and 11 counts of false pretences over $5,000
According to police, the charges filed by the RCMP Federal Operations East Unit in St. John’s were the result of an investigation by the RCMP in 2012. The investigation revolved around Joyce’s employment with a company in Pasadena, for which he worked for several months in 2011.
Joyce had already elected to be tried in Supreme Court by judge alone if he was committed to stand trial. He will now be arraigned on the charges in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in Corner Brook in September.
Meanwhile, these aren’t the only legal woes Joyce is facing. He, along with his company SLJ Developments Ltd., has been charged with failing to comply under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. It is alleged Joyce failed to comply with his obligations, as per the legislation, provided to him by the court-appointed trustee.
Those matters are being called at provincial court in St. John’s on Aug. 3.
