Fire Prevention Week in North America is Oct. 8-14. This year’s theme is ‘Every second counts: Plan 2 Ways out.”

Seconds can mean the difference between a resident escaping safely from a fire or having their lives cut short by a tragedy, so the theme is important for people to keep in mind.

Question: Do you have a fire escape plan in place for your home?

Ab Neary
Corner Brook

“I always have a fire escape plan for my home. Checking the windows. I have the fire alarms and an extinguisher. I’m always thinking about it because you have to be ready to go if a fire starts.”

Chris Wells
Mount Moriah

“I don’t have a fire escape plan, but should we have one? Yes. I’m part of the Mount Moriah volunteer fire department and it should be done. Should always have smoke detectors and well planned. Unfortunately, I don’t have one not right now. I just never took the time, but I need to put one together.”

Deanna Peddle
Deer Lake

“Yes. We have five exits from the house so if a fire were to start upstairs there’s a window that goes onto a ledge. Everybody should have a plan, especially with kids, because you need a quick way to get out no matter where the fire starts in the house. People who don’t have them should have them.”

Roger Hussey
Mount Moriah

“Yes I do. It’s the front door of my house and it’s really important obviously a quick exit and very efficient. Just in case anything drastic happens it’s there. It’s pretty important that everybody have one and those who don’t have one should get one.”

Wade Barry
Corner Brook

“My escape plan, where I only lives on the ground level, is if the fire is out in the kitchen area, then I can crawl out to the bedroom window. If the fire happens in the bedroom area, then I can go out the front door. Not everybody knows when there is going to be a fire so they should be prepared if there is one.”

Jennifer Osmond
Hampden

“We have an exit in our living room and one in our main entrance, which is on two completely opposite sides of the house. Our bedrooms are close to the living room so they know to go out that way and if there’s a fire on the other side they know they have to go the other way. Everyone should definitely have a plan because not long ago we had somebody in Hampden lose their home due to a fire. It could have been worse because if the situation was different and somebody was in the basement they might not have been able to get out.”
