A single-session walk-in mental health and addictions service that provides counselling to people who feel they need to speak to someone immediately is now available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
All four regional health authorities are offering the Doorways program, effective this week, according to a news release from the Department of Health and Communities Service issued today, Jan. 30.
It was previously only offered in the Eastern Health region.

“Making Doorways available province-wide is another way to break down the stigma attached to mental health in our communities and remove barriers to treatment,” Health and Community Services Minister John Haggie said.
Doorways requires no formal assessment and no triage, the department explained. There is also no intake process and no wait list.
Service is provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, and is made up of a one-hour therapy session based on a person’s individual needs.
The department offered a reminder, though, that Doorways is not an emergency service.
