Duffenais, a member of the women’s league executive, attended the Stephenville Gardens Commission’s meeting on Monday where the ban of alcohol in The Dome’s dressing rooms was imposed.

She said some of the men’s leagues have used the sale of donated beer as fundraisers to put toward the cost of ice rental.

“I get that, but for the safety of players and the commission protecting itself from a possible lawsuit, I support the ban,” said Duffenais.

“You’re going to play recreation hockey. It’s not a bar.”

She said the amount of drinking was probably getting out of hand and it’s time to get the problem fixed.

Duffenais said when the women had beer for sale, which took place for part of only one season, the players would carpool home if they drank more than one beer.

She said being responsible for bringing beer was too much work and wasn’t worth it, so the women’s league gave it up.

Stephenville Gardens Commission chair Bob Byrnes said, despite some online backlash, the ban of alcohol in the stadium’s dressing rooms will stand.

Byrnes said appropriate action would be taken if anyone is caught, including barring that person from the stadium or even involving police.
