Vocal teacher, Krista Noble of Deer Lake gathered ten local students to form the club and now the group consists of about 120 members.
“In Deer Lake and Rocky Harbour and areas there wasn’t much to offer in the arts without traveling to Corner Brook and that’s not always an option,” explained the club’s founder. “It’s really taken off and I think it’s opened a lot of doors.”
On June 3, the club is presenting its first production as a business, The Lion King Junior. The show’s first night is sold out and there are about 40 tickets left for the second show.
There are about 90 people involved and its full professional production
“We are extremely excited. I’m not nervous anymore; I was about eight months ago. Now that I am seeing it all together, I’m not nervous. It’s the first time we have charged for tickets, so it’s a different kind of pressure but we have extremely high expectations,” said Noble. “The kids are doing great and we already have adults asking if we will be producing an adult show.”
Noble has been singing herself for quite some time, in fact she has four albums. In Lion King Jr., her main focus has been the choir and she has been organizing the whole event.
Humber Valley Vocal Club continues to teach individual classes and lessons; they have a choir of over 50 members and they offer a range of programs and classes to children of all ages.
“We want to bring in a Broadway type of thing. We have expanded to dancing and acting,” said the owner. The Lion King Jr. will showcase a variety of talents including singing, dancing and acting.
Noble is looking forward to continuing to put on productions in the future including Annie in September.
“This is kind of the beginning. We are excited and amazed at how much it’s exploded,” she said.
