Back in court for the third time this week, Colin Wheeler changed his mind about self-representing, and asked for time to apply for a lawyer.
“I was thinking improperly. I was pissed off,” Wheeler told the court when he appeared on video from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary on two charges of assaulting fellow inmates last month. Wheeler entered not guilty pleas on the charges.

The matter was postponed until Aug. 23 to allow him time to make arrangements to get a lawyer.
Wheeler will be back in court Friday — this time in Corner Brook — when he will be sentenced on charges of assault with a weapon, mischief and breaching two court orders in connection with a violent incident involving two women in Benoit’s Cove, on the west coast of the island, last October. He’s been in custody since then, and has been charged with nine unrelated charges between then and now.
Those charges include assaulting inmates, damaging Her Majesty’s Penitentiary property to the tune of more than $10,000, and making false fire alarms.
He’ll go to trial on the majority of the charges in November, while the most recent three assault charges will be dealt with at a pre-trial conference next month.
