CORNER BROOK

About two dozen members of the Ironworkers Local 764 are protesting the lack of local hires at the site of the new long-term care home in Corner Brook.

The men, who came from around the Bay of Islands, Humber Valley and Stephenville area, arrived at the construction site at 6:30 a.m. on Monday.

Francis Simms, business agent for the union, said P.E.I.-based MacDougall Steel Erectors Inc. has been awarded the contract for supply, fabrication and erection of the steel on the build and is bringing in workers from outside the province to do the work.

Simms said there are plenty of workers locally who are capable of doing the job and are available for work now.
