As with the groomed snowmobile trails in and around Corner Brook and Stephenville, those around the Deer Lake and Bonne Bay areas are becoming tougher to maintain as spring arrives.
According to director Derek Murphy of the Junction Trail Blazers Snowmobiling Club’s executive, White River Road, Grindstone Road and Whitewash Road in the Goose Arm and Bonne Bay areas all still have decent snow depth for riding, but that won’t last much longer.

This time of the year, it’s the temperature that decides grooming, said Murphy, and temperatures at just -1 C or -2 C at night do not help the trails set up for traffic the next day. Getting temperatures well above freezing during the day makes conditions worsen even more quickly, he added.
Murphy said the age of the club’s groomers doesn’t help, either. Some of its equipment is now close to 20 years old, which makes it a challenge to provide a consistent snowmobiling product to trail pass buyers, Murphy said.
