Debbie Brake Patten, mayor of Kippens, and her daughter, Julia Patten are excited to be meeting New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio when they visit that city next month.
Brake Patten called the City of New York after planning a trip there as a graduation gift for her daughter, who is completing Grade 12 this year.
She spoke to an assistant to the mayor who has lined up a tour of city hall and meeting the mayor.
But the part of the trip Julia is looking forward to the most is seeing “Come From Away.”
She’s a big live theatre fan and the last time she went to New York City with the Stephenville High Concert Band she went to see “Wicked,” a production she said stood up to its name because it was, indeed, wicked.
With the subject of “Come From Away” so close to home she’s looking even more forward to seeing it, especially after all the rave reviews it has received.
Brake Patten said when she talked to the official at New York City Hall, she told her how people from the United States and a number of other countries were housed in this area when eight planes landed at Stephenville airport during the 9/11 attacks on the United States.
She said it’s going to be a whirlwind visit for her and Julia for three nights and four days in late March with lot of plans.
They’re going to see an afternoon matinee of “Come From Away” on March 25 and the tour of City Hall the following day. They’re also going to jam in a tour of Ground Zero and the UN Building and to Trump Tower for a visit.
Brake Patten said she’s also going to try and make contact with U.S. President Donald Trump, but don’t know if that will happen.
After graduating this year, 17-year-old Julia plans to attend the University of New Brunswick in the fall working pursuing a degree in leadership. Once that’s completed, she plans to go to medical school working towards becoming a pediatric oncologist.
