When you have excelled in the art of bush craft as an army cadet like Coiley Marche, getting the chance to explore and train in Australia is an obvious dream.

Well, the 18-year-old from Mount Moriah will wake up “down under” late this month, and spend about three weeks in that country training with the Australian military.

“I have always been an expert of bush craft in the cadets, it is what I teach mostly,” Marche said. “It has always been my little area of expertise, always my interest. I love just getting out and learning new things, seeing new places.”

The chief warrant officer with the 2590 Gallipoli Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps will be wrapping up his Grade 12 year at Corner Brook Regional High in the coming weeks. He will be flying to Australia June 30 for the army cadet exchange summer training program and returning July 22.

While some may be nervous about heading into unfamiliar territory to participate in unknown expeditions and exercises, Marche seems excited by the concept. With instructions to prepare for intense level training activities in remote locations and high altitudes, he is ready for just about anything.

“To be honest, it is just something I wanted to check off my bucket list,” he said. “I have always wanted to go there and see the sites.”

It will be the latest adventure for the young man who recently received his six-year cadet service medal. It has been a life-learning journey for him.

“It’s really helped develop me as a leader in my community,” Marche said.
