CORNER BROOK — Growing up around the music industry took its toll on Corner Brook native Evan Greene — and in a good way.
The son of Bugs and Debbie Greene, local Newfoundland musicians, Greene spent most of his life touring with his parents across various parts of Canada and the United States.
Greene, 21, is now living in Corner Brook and has recently tried his hand at DJing at local bars around the city. After purchasing DJ equipment in the fall of last year, Greene quickly taught himself how to use them and soon learned how much he enjoyed making music.
"Once I had my turntables and started playing around (with them) I realized it was something I really enjoyed and thought I could bring it to another level." DJ Van Greene first played at McHugh's Bar in October of last year and has since been successful in growing as an artist. He has played at Night Sounds, as well as secured a job as the ladies night DJ at Whelan's Gate.
Known by many for his good sense of the beat and style of DJing, Greene has been praised for his talent and ability to connect with his audience. Dave McHugh, owner of McHugh's, spoke highly of Greene, stating that "(Greene) seems to know his audience ... he seems to like what he is doing," and said that Greene is always willing to help him out if he needs entertainment on short notice.
Greene's parents, Bugs and Debbie Greene, attribute Greene's success to his ability to read the audience and as well as take that "extra step."
"Evan seems to be stepping outside of the box and trying to put off his own shows," said his mom. "He wants to not only be a DJ, but also a promoter."
Green is in the process of organizing and promoting an end of summer party at Night Sounds which will take place late August.
The event will be organized, promoted, advertised and DJed by Greene, and marks the beginning of Greene's intended work with the owner of Night Sounds, Gary Sparkes, starting in the fall. Greene aims to not only DJ, but to also host different events and theme nights on Saturday nights.
Greene said his main goal is to fill up the bars and have the dance floors full of people, "There is nothing better than having the entire dance floor and building packed."
Greene says overall his experience since he began DJing has been positive.
"It's been really good so far. Everybody I've talked to has a really positive attitude towards it all ... everybody's been over the top."
