“I figured first if I got a good camera that would be the place to start,” she said.
So she bought a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera and soon wanted to know how to use it better, how to do everything with it that she could.
Around the same time, the Around the Humber Photo Club was getting started, so Peddle joined.
“Being around a group of more experienced photographers is a really good way to learn,” said Peddle.
The group includes beginner to experienced photographers, and Peddle said everybody helps each other.
There are about 150 people in the club’s Facebook group and 10-15 who regularly attend meetings and outings.
Peddle said everyone in the group has an area of interest, from landscapes to macro photography. Peddle runs her own daycare, and with her desire to get nice pictures of her grandchildren, it’s no surprise her area of interest is children.
“I have lots of willing subjects.”
On May 9, the club will be holding a free family portrait event at the WestRock Community Centre, for families served by the centre. The event is being held in partnership with Westside Tabernacle.
Peddle had heard about a camera club in St. John’s doing the same sort of project, and thought the club could hold a similar event locally if the opportunity arose.
The group had done some volunteer photography for Special Olympics recently and members were willing to help out again. Peddle approached a member of the Westside Tabernacle and the event was set.
She will be right there with her camera, helping capture some special family moments.
“It will be really nice, really rewarding to be able to give back to your community and doing something helpful for somebody.”
Besides their time, some of the photographers are donating their lights, backdrops and other equipment for the day. Families can call the centre at 634-4077, ext. 2, to sign up. Participating families will get a framed 8x10 photo of one pose. They’ll also get copies of the images emailed to them.
