“I’m not stopping, no way until some trace is found,” he said of the search.
He and family members are hoping that Larry is still alive and just hiding away somewhere closeby.
Legge said between family and friends there have been some 40 to 50 people out searching at different times for Young, combing the woods and bogs behind the trailer he stayed in on Steel Mountain Road, along with other areas in St. George’s but unfortunately there has been no sign of anything yet, not even something he might have dropped.
For a ground search he said they only had about a dozen people show up.
Legge, who left his job in Forteau, Labrador to go searching, said Young’s family is really concerned about him – especially his mom, Clara May Young, who is 87 years old.
His brother Raymond Young, who lives nearby on Muise’s Lane, has been searching as well when he is off work and said the while family is concerned. The family has 18 members, of which seven are living in the area.
Legge said it was after two and a half days an official search by the RCMP and Barachois Search and Rescue was called off on Monday evening. He said there was an indication that if another lead was to come up that the RCMP would act on it and have the search team brought back in.
“My job’s not important right now,” he said. “When I heard of Larry missing I hopped on a plane and my boss at Valard Construction told me not to return to work until he (Young) is found,” Legge said.
Legge said Larry’s a good fellow and the two got along great, especially while hunting and fishing together.
He said there have been rumors in the community that Young was seen on Saturday and at other times; however, he said nobody from the family has seen him since Friday morning and that’s what he believes.
A neighbour said Larry was in an agitated state on Friday morning before he went missing.
Fire Chief Richard Legge of the Flat Bay Fire Department said following a meeting with the other Richard Legge of St. George’s that his members were informed St. George’s area was pretty well covered, so they were asked and agreed to extend the search into the Flat Bay area.
“We (firefighters) will be giving them a hand by looking on beaches, along the rivers and check nearby cabins in the area,” he said.
Fire Chief Legge said they will also be asking members of the general public going to their cabins, fishing or berry picking to keep an eye for Young.
Young is described as 5' 7" tall, 150 pounds, dark hair (with some grey) and brown eyes. He also has a moustache and tattoos and was last seen wearing a red long-sleeve shirt and dark pants.
Anyone with information on Larry Young’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Bay St. George RCMP at 709-643-2118. To remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), text TIP190 + your message to 'CRIMES' (274637), or submit a webtip at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
