Minor hockey is certainly a family venture for the Biggins

Keith Biggin believes hockey is a game for every child to enjoy regardless of athletic ability as long as they are having fun.

That’s a message he and his wife, Della, try to instill in their two children — Nathan and Kathryn — when they participate in the Corner Brook minor hockey system.

The two children love to play the game, so mom and dad do what they can to ensure they get the most out of being on the ice. It’s a game that mom and dad also love, and they are active volunteers within the system.

“Trophies are nice, but at the end of the day if the kids are having fun and enjoying themselves enough to continue playing, that’s what it’s all about,” Keith said Wednesday before Kathryn attending a female hockey practice at the Kinsmen Arena II.

Keith coaches in both the atom, under-12 female and bantam divisions, while also taking on the role of vice-president for the bantam division after moving to the city two years ago from Wabush.

Della, besides being on her toes keeping everybody’s schedule under wraps, serves as the manager of the Corner Brook Bantam A squad.

Keith, a native of Daniel’s Harbour, says the real treat for him is seeing how the game has a positive impact on so many boys and girls.

“It’s always nice when you see kids coming off the ice with smiles on their face,” he said. “To me that’s the main goal. It’s nice to see. You can’t beat that.”

Della says hockey is always a topic of discussion around the supper table, so it’s safe to say this family is big on the game. She will continue to support her children and do what she can to help out because she knows the game needs everybody to play a part to make it a success.

“We just leave it to them,” she said. “If they want to go to a practice or a game, they go, but if they don’t, then we don’t pressure. It’s all about them.”

It’s a hectic pace to maintain, but something the family has enjoyed adjusting to because it’s something that bonds them closer together.
