The City of Corner Brook will celebrate itself on July 15.

Corner Brook Day festivities will kick off with a garden party to honour all veterans in the civic square outside city hall at 11:30 a.m. Lt.-Gov. Frank Fagan will be in attendance.

Later in the day the celebration will move to Margaret Bowater Park. The park will be transformed into a carnival atmosphere, complete with rides, games, prizes, delicious treats and live music. The party in the park will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Edinburgh Street to be rebuilt

Residents of Edinburgh Street should soon see a big improvement to their road.

During Monday night’s council meeting, the city awarded a $749,086.04 contract to Marine Contractors for the complete reconstruction of the road.

The main water line on the road is cast iron and while it appears to be in reasonable condition, there is no bedding material around the pipe and the road sub-grade material is inappropriate.

The lack of bedding around the pipe, combined with the brittle nature of cast iron pipe, makes it very susceptible to breaks caused by frost cycles and general ground movement. In analyzing the break history, the street has experienced six breaks/leaks in the last 11 years.

Staff advised council that rebuilding the road surface without replacing the services would not be the preferred approach to improving the overall situation and that a complete rebuild of the street was justified.

Marine Contractors bid was the lowest of three received on the tender.

Guide rail replacement contract awarded

Humber Arm Contracting Inc. has been awarded a contract with the City of Corner Brook for the replacement of guide rails around the city on an as needed basis.

The $68,028.26 contract is for a three-year period.

Humber Arm Contracting was the lowest of two bids received on the tender that closed on June 19. The other bid, from Blackstar Solutions Inc., came in at $93,677.

Caribou Road will be added to list for next round of capital funding

The City of Corner Brook has reviewed the condition of Caribou Road and will be adding upgrading of the lower portion of the road to its list for projects to be considered in the next round of capital funding.

Residents of the street had presented a petition calling for upgrades to the road to council on June 8.

The top section of the road has already been prioritized to be paved this year.

Maintenance on the lower section will be done on an as-needed basis until the capital upgrades can be carried out.

Land use designation and zoning changed

Corner Brook City Council approved the changing of the land use designation and land use zoning for an area off Elizabeth Street during its meeting Monday night.

The area between civic numbers 63 and 73, and a strip of land at the rear of lots 73 to 81 has been changed from residential and residential medium density to innovation district.

The change is necessary to allow a driveway access to a commercial (hotel complex) site and to enable the commercial site to be fully located within the innovation district land use and zoning designations.

City approves more land for subdivision

The City of Corner Brook has approved an application for Crown land located adjacent to the Parkway Heights Subdivision.

The property owner of the subdivision had requested permission to obtain the parcel of Crown land for use as part of the residential subdivision located off the Lewin Parkway.

The application was approved, subject to the condition that the land be consolidated with adjacent property.
