The 26-year-old from Rocky Harbour was charged with seven offences after the single-vehicle accident near St. Paul’s Aug. 13 in which 20-year-old David Dwayne White died.
A man and a woman who were also passengers in the car driven by Shears-Decker were also hurt.
The original seven charges, for which he has been committed to stand trial for, included three counts of impaired driving, one count of failure to provide a breath sample, one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.
When the matter was called in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador in Corner Brook Monday morning, his lawyer, Robby Ash entered guilty pleas to two amended charges. The pleas were for refusing the breathalyzer after knowing his operation of a motor vehicle resulted in an accident that caused death and refusing the breathalyzer after knowing his operation of a motor vehicle resulted in an accident that caused bodily harm.
No pleas were entered on any remaining charges and the matter was set to be called for facts and sentencing Nov. 6.
