That’s thanks to a road and parking lot being created at a location off Maryland Drive and behind the Weather Station in that area.

Deputy Mayor Mike Tobin stated his pleasure with seeing the parking lot going in, especially since there are other areas where the trail is accessed that are not so safe.

He said one of those is the road which runs up from Brook Street and crosses at the edge of the Bay St. George Ready Mix property.

That road also leads to one of the Town of Stephenville’s pump houses and there have been issues with town employees getting access to the pump house because of the amount of vehicles parked there while people are out on the trail.

Mayor Tom O’Brien is encouraging people to use the Maryland Drive access, now that it’s nearly complete to try and avoid an accident taking place from the Brook Street access.

Tobin said there is another issue with people parking on the side of the Hansen Highway and accessing the trail from that area, located at the town’s access road to their water reservoir tanks. He said sometimes motorists park their vehicle on the opposite side of the highway from where they go down the trail and this is dangerous as they have to cross in an 80 km/h speed zone.

Tobin said a woman with a child was spotted crossing the highway at the location and said that just should not be happening.

“We need to alert the public not to be doing this,” Tobin said.

O’Brien said there are plans to put another parking lot on the Hansen Highway near a Town of Stephenville pump house located on a straight portion of the highway on the same side of the road as Ned’s Pond for access to the trail.
