A loaded gun magazine lost by a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer remains unaccounted for and the force thinks it’s unlikely it will ever be found.

An officer lost the ammunition some time between midnight and 6 a.m. on Sept. 28.

The force would not indicate the general location where the magazine was thought to be lost or the type of firearm it would have been used with.

The RNC did at the time express concern for the missing magazine and asked anyone who found it to contact the police immediately.

When asked for an update on the missing police property recently, the RNC again refused to say where it was lost or what specific danger the ammunition might pose should it fall into the wrong hands.

Const. Shawna Park, the RNC’s media relations officer, said the ammunition would pose no more of a threat than any other kind of ammunition that might have been lost by a civilian and that it would likely require a deliberate action to make it hazardous.

Park said the area has been searched using several different techniques employed by the police, including the use of police dogs from both the RNC and RCMP, along with members of the Bay of Islands Ground Search and Rescue team.

Park said the area in question is not somewhere frequented by the general public and said it is highly unlikely anyone will easily find the missing magazine if the search efforts so far have not located it.
