The breach was reported to officials last Wednesday.

According to an emailed statement from the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District, a memo has been sent to the school’s community, informing those recipients that there was an incident involving the inappropriate use of school- and district-owned technology.

While the school board said the risk has been determined to be low, information technology staff of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District has taken steps to further safeguard student information. This includes changing school-based passwords and G-Suite (Google) passwords.

Students have also been advised to change any personal passwords that are the same as passwords used at school.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner were contacted by the school board about the breach so those agencies could undertake any action they deemed necessary.

Const. Shawna Park, media relations officer for the RNC in Corner Brook, said Monday the police investigation into whether there was an actual breach of privacy and whether or not any charges will be laid is ongoing.
