Justyn Pollard was killed when the snowmobile he was driving collided head on with a taxi on the bridge leading to the Humber Valley Resort.
Cpl. Trevor O’Keefe, media relations officer in St. John’s, said a traffic analyst has attended the scene, taking photographs and measurements in an effort to reconstruct what happened. Members with the Corner Brook Detachment have been taking statements from witnesses and others involved in the collision.
The collision occurred at 4 a.m. O’Keefe said it’s not yet known if alcohol or speed were a factor. O’Keefe said it is hard to say at this point if there will be any charges as that depends on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
The 26-year-old passenger on the snowmobile suffered a number of broken bones and is still in hospital. The man is from the Conception Bay South area, as was Pollard.
O’Keefe said he had no information about the condition of one of the occupants injured in the taxi and would not say if the person was one of the five passengers or the taxi driver.
The Corner Brook Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, the Steady Brook Little Rapids Regional Fire Service and local paramedics assisted the RCMP at the scene.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to assist Pollard’s family with funeral costs. Up to mid-afternoon on Monday $6,330 of a $15,000 goal had been raised.
An obituary listing from Barrett’s Funeral Home says Pollard’s funeral will be held Friday.
