The two provincial cabinet ministers for the Corner Brook area came to town with more than $4.5 million in funding each Tuesday.

Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce announces $4.5 million to help implement the western Newfoundland waste management strategy in Corner Brook Tuesday.

Municipal Affairs and Environment Minister Eddie Joyce had money for the Western Regional Service Board to help move along plans to implement the western regional waste management strategy.

Advanced Education and Skills Minister Gerry Byrne, meanwhile, announced funding for projects under the City of Corner Brook’s multi-year capital works program.

The $4.5 million for the City of Corner Brook will go towards water quality improvements, storm sewer upgrades, culvert replacements, and upgrades to city infrastructure.

About $110,000 of the amount is being allocated towards a feasibility study for a regional aquatic centre in Corner Brook. This feasibility study will undertake research and critical analysis to address an identified gap in aquatic and recreation facilities in the region and help identify potential solutions.

The more than $4.5 million in funding to the Western Regional Service Board comes from the Federal Gas Tax Agreement. This funding will assist the board to address urgent items it has identified as priorities for the continued development of waste management in the region.

Under the provincial waste management strategy, the province has committed to providing 100 per cent of the funding for the establishment of regional waste management infrastructure, and around $170 million has been spent to date on this initiative.
