The proposed Grieg NL aquaculture project for Placentia Bay continues under environmental assessment.

The provincial Department of Municipal Affairs and Environments environmental assessment committee is currently seeking feedback from the public on proposed guidelines for the company on what will be required in its environmental impact statement (EIS) submission.

The draft EIS guidelines are available on the provincial governments website. They specify the details the companies will have to address — from the procedures and equipment to be available for handling any fish escapes to plans for decommissioning sites as required.

Responses are due back from the public by Feb. 11.

The guidelines are expected to be set by the minister by March 8.

If ultimately approved, construction of a new hatchery in Marystown is expected to take about 18 months. Sea cages are expected to be installed in 11 locations over the next three years for farming operations.
