While he didn’t yet have a report from Stephenville on Tuesday afternoon, Josh Carey, chair of the Western Regional Waste Management Committee, said there was good compliance with the Sort-It Western program on Monday.
He said the two-stream recycling and garbage program went well on its opening day in Pasadena, with good compliance and that in Corner Brook things were proceeding well and that Mayor Jim Parsons said he was glad to see it occurring.

Carey said he realizes this is a huge adjustment for municipalities and individuals to make and he feels, over time, with ongoing education with individuals and consultations with municipalities, that people will comply.
He said he and committee members met with representatives of municipalities and local service districts in all seven sub-regions in May, walking those in attendance through the process and staying as long as it took to answer all questions that people had.
Carey estimated that 95 per cent of municipalities welcomed the opportunity of this Sort-It program and that the other five per cent were a bit apprehensive about it but said that’s understandable, as well.
A drive around Stephenville’s designated area for pickup on Tuesday revealed a fairly good number of compliance with a lot less dark garbage bags out than the clear bags for garbage and the blue-tinted for recyclable materials.
In a press release Monday, the Western Regional Waste Management group had not reached an agreement on tipping fees with Central Regional Waste Management Authority.
As a result, the west coast group would not be shipping waste to the waste management facility in Norris Arm until an agreement is reached. There will not be a change to collection in the two-stream system as a result of the delay.
