Those were the words of Mayor Tom O’Brien when asked about the Eastern Regional Appeal Board overturning a decision by the Marystown council to not allow Blue Sky Family Care to operate a youth home in a residential area of the community.

In early June, the Marystown council voted against the company’s proposal to open and manage the home, which has four bedrooms and would house youth removed from their homes.

Blue Sky cares for children with a range of needs, including those requiring temporary accommodation to others with more complex issues.

The Stephenville town council also turned down a permit in June for Blue Sky to operate a similar facility in the municipality. O’Brien would only say that an appeal is scheduled for review by the West Newfoundland Regional Appeal Board in September.

“We’ll put forward our details at that time,” O’Brien said following Thursday’s meeting of Stephenville town council.

He said he can’t comment on any details of the matter is because it is in the appeal process.

When the decision of the West Newfoundland Regional Appeal Board is made, O’Brien said either party could potentially bring the matter to a court of law.

Residents in the Russell Heights area of Stephenville, where Blue Sky had proposed to operate the youth home, had voiced their concerns about the youth that would be housed there and how they felt it would devalue their properties.
