CORNER BROOK — Angela Bugden and Ernesto Fuentes enjoy joking around with the best of people, but the play ends when it comes to a challenge.

The couple from Corner Brook have taken their competitive nature to a whole new level in their quest to become contestants on the inaugural season of The Amazing Race Canada.

Their competitiveness is so intense, there is a daily competition between them to see who can earn the most points on their fuel bands (a bracelet that measures movement).

“She will go outside and go for a run just to beat me on my points,” Fuentes said. “We are competitive with each other, and we are competitive when it comes to other people as well. If we can enter into some kind of competition, we enter.”

They submitted their online video application this week — a compilation of footage shot during their travels and some fresh stuff to showcase their quirky and enthusiastic personalities. The pair admit they had that much fun piecing together the video that if they are not successful in being chosen among the thousands of Canadian applicants, it was well worthwhile.

Bugden and Fuentes have been dating for about two years, and have dubbed themselves Team Newfexican for this competition. Bugden is a Corner Brook native and Fuentes hails from Mexico.

Set to air on CTV’s summer 2013 schedule, The Amazing Race Canada gives Canadians the opportunity to race around Canada and discover the country in a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. With potential stops in all 10 provinces and three territories, teams will race to the finish line, crisscrossing up to 9,000 kilometres.

Bugden and Fuentes believe they are the perfect pairing to compete in the gruelling contest.

“She is the silliest girl I have ever met, and she always makes our trips silly and crazy,” Fuentes said, adding she mixes that up with a lot of drama too. “She can be so patient and understanding, where I am a little more aggressive. She compliments that part and it brings me to a calm state.”

Much of Bugden’s patience can be attributed to her work as an elementary school teacher, but outside the classroom she enjoys playing ice hockey and going on adventures. Fuentes is a commercial diver, who has dabbled in the hospitality management field while living in Newfoundland.

There are a number of reasons why Bugden wants to be a part of The Amazing Race Canada.

“We are competitive and we like challenges,” she said. “There would be travelling and we would be working together. It would be good for our relationship too.”

Fuentes said the opportunity to race through the entire country would be a privilege.

“It’s a chance to explore our own backyard, which many Canadians unfortunately do not have an opportunity to do,” he said.

The couple also said it would be an honour to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the race.

Bugden and Fuentes’ encourages people to watch their video application — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYWgspSkXpk — which was already nearing 2,200 views Sunday afternoon.

The deadline to apply for the Canadian version of The Amazing Race is Feb. 28.
