A long-time worker with Atlantic Minerals has been killed on the job at the company’s quarry in Lower Cove on the Port au Port Peninsula.
According to a press release issued by the company Tuesday afternoon, the man had been injured in an accident earlier in the day, but later died of those injuries.
Officials with Occupational Health and Safety and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are currently investigating the fatality.
The press release stated Atlantic Minerals Limited is co-operating fully with both of these agencies.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of this long-term employee and we offer sincere condolences to his family and coworkers,” stated the release.
Rob Kenny, the company’s human resources manager, said late Tuesday afternoon that it was too early for the company to make any further comment about the man or what happened.
“It’s a really sensitive time right now and we really can’t say much more as we’re not sure all of the next of kin have been notified,” said Kenny.
According to the RCMP, the man was 55 years old. Sources have told The Western Star he was from the Port au Port Peninsula area.
The Western Star also asked for an interview with Occupational Health and Safety. None was granted, but in an emailed response the agency offered its condolences, noting the impact of a workplace fatality is felt by family, friends and co-workers, and resonates with all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
