A man from York Harbour with a history of violence and sex offences has been charged with another sexual assault.

Timothy Russell Sheppard, 47, is in custody while the courts are dealing with the latest charges against him.

He was scheduled to have a sentencing hearing in provincial court in Corner Brook today for two counts of fraud under $5,000 and possessing property obtained by crime.

He made an appearance in court Tuesday for charges that included two counts of breaking and entering and committing an indictable offence, two breaches of probation and a single count of uttering threats.

He is also scheduled to appear in court March 6 on a count of sexual assault, a count of assault and two more probation breaches.

Crown attorney Adam Sparkes said the Crown will be seeking a postponement of today’s sentencing hearing, given the new outstanding charges against Sheppard.

Instead, a bail hearing was set for Thursday.

The sexual assault charge, which was filed with the court registry Monday, alleges an assault on a female in Corner Brook in December.

Sheppard was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2009 for breaking into a woman’s home and raping her. His statutory release date was in November 2013, but he was put back in prison to serve the entirety of his sentence after he violated the conditions of the statutory release.

Before he was released, the Parole Board of Canada reported Sheppard’s propensity for violence and sexual deviance was untreated. An assessment deemed him to be at the high end of the moderate range for general and violent recidivism and at the low end of the high range to commit another sexual offence.

He has a long list of convictions for other serious crimes since 1990, including sexual interference when he entered a home and unzipped a young girl’s pants in 1998. In 2006, he and an accomplice broke into a man's home with the intentions of robbing him, but assaulted and left the man unconscious after he refused to give them money.

Sheppard's criminal record also includes physical assaults against former girlfriends.
