The radiothon is part of the foundation’s annual fundraising, which kicked off in June with a Case for Support at the hospital, where it was noted $533,500 worth of equipment was identified in the project.

While Lombard said she couldn’t speak about all of the equipment, she did speak about how radiology equipment will improve patient care and diagnostics.

“All this equipment for the hospital is really a bread and butter kind of thing,” she said.

Lombard said Barco monitors are high-resolution mammography units used to read images received from all hospital in the western region.

She said the monitor can compare scans from year-to-year with crisp and in-focus images, allowing radiologists to detect subtle changes from year to year and also giving them the ability detect cancer at early stages, giving the best chance for a patient.

Lombard said the general ultrasound is a very safe piece of equipment, especially for children and unborn babies. She said it looks at babies inside the womb and is used for looking into all body parts for people of all ages and for a wide variety of health issues.

The radiothon takes place today from the Corner Brook Plaza near the Sears entrance. People across Western Newfoundland and beyond are encourage to make pledges to reach the goal of purchasing the equipment identified.

The equipment includes:

• Barco 12 MP monitors and workstations for breast screening and early cancer detection;

• General ultrasounds to help diagnose causes of pain, swelling and infection within the body and to examine babies in the womb;

• Wireless fetal monitors to track babies’ heart rates and monitor high-risk pregnancies;

• IOL Master for fast, accurate measurements of multiple areas of the eye for cataract surgery;

• A T5XR NuStep Recumbent Cross Trainer for invaluable rehabilitation in physical therapy for orthopedics, geriatrics, neurology, cardiovascular and pulmonary disciplines;

• E70 CoughAssist for a non-invasive method to help keep airways clear longer, reducing occurrence of respiratory infections and improving the quality of life for people with ALS, MS, quadriplegia and other conditions.
