Corner Brook played host to Hockey Day in Canada this past week with people from all walks of life showing their community pride by rubbing shoulders with some of hockey’s greatest personalities, both professional and local, with hockey games and clinics a highlight of a weekend that saw sellout crowds for a number of the major events including the NHL Alumni/Corner Brook Royals Classic.
Question? What major event would you like to see the City of Corner Brook host next and why do you think it’s important to hold events that the community can enjoy and support?

A couple of years ago they had the Toronto Blues with Duane Ward come here for a baseball clinic so I would like for them to have a Blue Jays training camp here that would be pretty cool. Having these kinds of events definitely draws people in and makes it more interesting around Corner Brook to have something to do.

Corner Brook got the facilities to host a lot of stuff. What’s going on up at the civic centre? From what I can follow on radio and television they’re not promoting it enough. We got to keep bringing in teams from different parts of the province for tournaments, but I can say there’s not enough concerts, so a big-name concert might be nice. Anything big we can get we should try for as far as I’m concerned the city is not promoting itself enough.

I have no idea, but I would love to see them bring something in for children. There’s not a whole lot for the children to do around here, especially in the winter months and it’s very seldom in the summer as well. It would be great to have something that would bring the kids out with some games and events.

I know hockey is great, but maybe we can bring in some professional basketball. That would be nice. It would be something different. I know a lot of people like hockey but it would still be great to do something different. It’s definitely important to have these type of events because it’s something for the community to do and enjoy, and actually look forward to. People in Corner Brook look forward to these type of events so it’s good to have.

To be honest I’m not sure what we could do next, but I do know that the support is there and that was evident in the support we got for Hockey Day in Canada. We had a soldout building and we had volunteers all over the community doing things. Like I said, I don’t know what we could do next, but I do know whatever we choose to do I know we have the support in place.

I’d like to see another major event that would bring in some famous person. We just had Don Cherry so maybe we can look at getting some famous singer come here for a concert. There are a lot of popular singers out there and a lot of people would like to see them because we don’t much of that here. It would be nice to have a big field with a big stage outdoors and have somebody like ACDC come here for a concert. You get everybody to come together, socialize and have a good time.
