The path of the weather system expected to arrive in western Newfoundland today, and the impact it will have, has changed once again.
The latest alerts from Environment Canada see the wind warning issued Thursday for southwestern Newfoundland now extending further north up the west coast to include the Stephenville, Corner Brook and Gros Morne vicinities.
Strong southeasterly winds will develop in the Port-Aux-Basques area near noon today with gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour. Those winds will spread to Bay St. George to Gros Morne, with wind gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour developing this afternoon or early this evening in areas prone to enhanced easterlies.
Winds are expected to diminish late this afternoon in the Port-Aux-Basques area and in the mid to late evening hours along the rest of the coast.
Environment Canada is warning that damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.
The special weather statement issued earlier this week for the island of Newfoundland is now in effect for the Deer lake and Humber Valley vicinity, the Northern Peninsula, along with the White Bay-Green Bay, Buchans and interior and southeastern Labrador vicinities.
Those areas can expect to see a wintry mix of rain and snow, starting on the island Friday afternoon and extending into Saturday.
