“Come From Away” captures that goodness and hope we need, Madigan said in an email about the Broadway musical that tells the story of the town of Gander’s involvement in the tragedy of 9-11.
Madigan and his wife are currently vacationing in the New York area and were able to get press tickets for Saturday’s matinee. The couple hosts a weekly “Voice of Bonne Bay” radio show from Woody Point. During a recent broadcast they spoke with Steady Brook resident Elaine Huxter in Toronto, who tweeted that she had seen “Come From Away” and thought the musical was fantastic.
“Fantastic is an understatement,” said Madigan stated in his email. “This musical enthralled us 100 per cent and is the best I’ve seen ever.”
He said they heard audience members cry and laugh through the show.
“It made us proud to be living in Newfoundland and knowing that the goodness, sincerity, humour and down-to-earthness of Newfoundlanders shown to 8,000-plus passengers who landed in Gander during 9-11 still exists today.”
Madigan said the creators of “Come From Away,” the Canadian husband and wife team of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, really captured the essence of being true, honest and helpful Newfoundlanders.
After the show, the Madigans asked a technician if Newfoundland actress Petrina Bromley, who is part of the cast, could come and say hello to them. Bromley did just that and even did a short interview with them for the radio station.
Through the wonders of Skype, the Madigans plan to share their experience with “Voice of Bonne Bay” host Gary Noel at 10:30 a.m. today.
