Premier Dwight Ball said the province will issue its own apology to people who attended residential schools.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay Friday to apologize to former students of the residential school system.
Ball will also attend the federal apology ceremony.
Ball said Trudeau’s apology is an important step to advance reconciliation with Indigenous people in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I wish to advise that the provincial government will undertake its own apology to residential school survivors, in consultation with the survivors of the former residential school system and the leaders of Indigenous governments and organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador,” Ball said Thursday.
“Further details will be provided as they can be made available.”
