Corp. John Butler of the Bay St. George RCMP said police still find it a mystery how Larry Young could have disappeared so quickly and without a trace.

Young is the 47-year-old St. George’s man who went missing from his home on Aug. 5 and hasn’t been heard of since, despite extensive searches.

Those searches involved everyone from police dog services, search and rescue on the ground and in helicopter, to family members and friends who are quite familiar with the St. George’s area.

Butler said the big mystery is that within 45 minutes of him being gone, police were there with their search dog, which couldn’t pick up any scent past 100 feet of the trailer in which Young lived on Steel Mountain Road in St. George’s.

He said Young had been showing signs of distress, and when he was last seen, it was believed he was up all the previous night.

Butler said it was his understanding that about a month ago family members and friends carried out another search with all-terrain vehicles, but didn’t come up with anything.

“It’s still an active investigation. However, with no starting point or some kind of credible lead there’s really nowhere to go looking,” he said.

Butler said in the early going all the wooded area around St. George’s was searched, along with a number of cabins or other places Young was known to have gone, and there wasn’t a trace of him or even a scrap of clothing.

He said the more time that passes, the police believe it will be a recovery mission.

Butler said police have checked on a regular basis and there has been no activity on his bank account, so that’s not a good sign, either.

He said they are continuing to check in with his family on a regular basis.

Young is described as 5’ 7” tall, 150 pounds (68 kilograms) with dark hair (some grey) and brown eyes. He has a moustache and tattoos, and was last seen wearing a red, long-sleeve shirt and dark pants.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Young is asked to contact the Bay St. George RCMP at 709-643-2118.
