ROCKY HARBOUR, NL – Last week’s weather event on the province’s west coast has resulted in the immediate closure of the snowmobiling season in Gros Morne National Park until further notice.
Parks Canada announced the decision in an information bulletin today, Jan. 18.
The closure will help keep visitors safe and prevent damage to the routes and backcountry, the bulletin stated.
No snowmobile activity will be permitted within the park boundaries for either resident or public/commercial snowmobile permit holders until snow conditions improve and staff with Parks Canada can assess potential hazards.
The bulletin points out that permits issued to access the park by snowmobile indicate the season dates are subject to change for several possible reasons, including unfavourable snow conditions, dangerous areas, or impact to ecosystems.
