Coun. Mark Felix wants residents of Stephenville to take advantage of the current fall cleanup the town has on the go and get their large items to the curb.
The finance committee chair said at the regular general meeting of the Stephenville town council on Thursday getting everything out now will save the town about a hundred dollars a ton, once Western Regional Waste Management puts up tipping fees next year.
Mayor Tom Rose said that hike is concerning and that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are already tapped out when it comes to taxes.
He said communities, including Cold Brook and Noel’s Pond, which are under Stephenville’s boundaries will also have to have their waste collection fees go up too.
Rose said now that the town has implemented a fall cleanup in addition to the spring cleanup, there might have to be some changes to the timelines for putting out larger debris during the summer.
He said debris is picked up on Fridays during the summer when people inform the town they have it out.
However, this is not in line with a clean and beautiful town during the summer tourism season.
Rose feels the town council might have to revisit the timeline for that collection during the summer.
