Students and parents in Mount Pearl had some uneasy moments Thursday afternoon after it was reported someone had been spotted in the area of the schools with a handgun.
Turns out, it was a teenage boy with a toy gun, but the incident caused quite a stir.
RNC patrol services division and police dog services arrived at St. Peter’s Junior High on Munden Drive at around 1:30 p.m. after receiving the report.
As a result, in consultation with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School (District), several schools in Mount Pearl were placed in “secure school mode,” or lockdown.
“No information was received to suggest that this male had made any threats involving the handgun,” RNC Const. Daniel Morrissey said in a news release.
“Nonetheless, as a precautionary measure, several schools in the area took measures to ensure student safety based upon advice provided by the RNC.”
NLESD communications director Ken Morrissey said police advised schools to hold the students inside until given notice things were clear and while officers investigated.
Students were given the go-ahead to board buses shortly after 2 p.m., a parent told The Telegram.
