Parts of western Newfoundland can expect to deal with a proverbial weather sandwich to kick off this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the entire island of Newfoundland as a low-pressure system approaches from the west.

The system is expected to bring with it a wintry mix of rain and snow Friday.

While the precipitation is expected to be mainly rain over the southern and eastern portions of the island, other areas can expect to see rain turning to snow, then back to rain again.

Rain is expected to begin in the west late in the day Friday, then spread east and transition to snow, especially over higher terrain, during the night. Snow is expected to become mixed rain on Saturday in areas where temperatures rise above freezing.

The precipitation is expected to taper off Saturday evening.
According to The Weather Network, the Corner Brook area is forecast to get between one to three millimetres of rain and about one centimetre of snow Friday and between two to four millimetres of rain and less than one centimetre of snow Saturday.

The Corner Brook vicinity will see close to another 10 millimetres of rain falling in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The temperatures are expected to be around 3 C to 4 C during the day Friday to Sunday and will drop to around 1 C overnight Friday and Saturday.

Rain will be heavier and temperatures a little milder to the south, with the Port aux Basques vicinity expecting between 20-35 millimetres of rain and highs of 5 C to 6 C between Friday and Sunday.

It will likely be more of a snow event to the north, with about seven centimetres of snow and expected between Friday and Sunday for the St. Anthony area before one to three millimetres of rain falls there Sunday.
