STEPHENVILLE  Waiting for some equipment to arrive is all that’s preventing the Humber Community YMCA from opening up shop in the former West Coast Training Centre in Stephenville.

Renovations on the building — being carried out by 10503 Nfld. Limited/Callahan’s Contracting of Stephenville at $49,000 plus harmonized sales tax — are just about complete, said Mayor Tom O’Brien.

He first hoped for the YMCA to be operating in the building by the end of 2013, but is now hoping for the operation to start by the end of January.

O’Brien said the suppliers have to make some of the equipment needed to finish the job, and the YMCA has to wait for it to be built and delivered.

The provincial government announced the closing of the West Coast Training Centre in March 2013 and closed the facility at the end of June.

A month later, the Town of Stephenville accepted an offer from the provincial government to take ownership of the facility, a deal which included the province providing the town with $515,000 to undertake renovations and upgrades at the fitness and sport centre.

In addition to interior renovations, roof work has also been carried out on the building. Exterior renovations are expected to take place later this year.

Part of the plan is to incorporate a health and wellness centre, which involves expanding the current workout space with a more open, user-friendly concept. The interior painting will be warm and welcoming colours.

O’Brien said the town is having an energy audit carried out of all town-owned buildings, and the YMCA facility will be included in that audit.
