A passing driver took this cellphone photo of a school bus that sank into a ditch along the Trans-Canada Highway between Howley and Deer Lake on Thursday. No one was injured in the accident.

CORNER BROOK  There were no injuries when a school bus carrying students from Howley to Deer Lake went of the road on Thursday morning.

Cpl. Eric Humber of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Deer Lake Detachment said there were six students and the bus driver on board the vehicle at the time of the accident.

“The school bus was travelling from Howley and it was on the Trans-Canada Highway about five kilometres west of the Howley Junction,” said Humber. “The visibility at the time was fair, but it wasn’t great.”

Humber said at around 8:30 a.m. the driver of the bus attempted to pull to the shoulder of the road to clear her windshield wiper of ice.

He said the snow in the area is pushed back pretty far along the shoulder.

“And it’s a little deceiving, because you think it’s a lot of road and shoulder.”

However, Humber said when the driver pulled to one side what she thought was the shoulder of the road was soft snow. “And the bus slid in the ditch.”

Police were notified of the accident at about 8:40 a.m.

Humber said upon arrival police set out some safety triangles to alert motorists. He said the bus was not impeding either of the lanes and traffic continued to flow in both lanes.

The students were kept on the bus until another one arrived at 9 a.m.

“It was warm,” said Humber. “Outside it was very cold and the bus was stable. It wasn’t in any danger.”

Once loaded on the second bus, Humber said the students were brought back to Howley.

Conways was called in to pull the bus out of the ditch and Humber said that was done just prior to lunch. He noted that the highway was shut down temporarily at that point to enable removal of the bus.

Thank goodness no one was hurt. We were on the road the same time and decided to turn back to Howley before going on the highway. The causeways on route 401 were terrible with very low visibility. Hope this incident doesn't scare the students from travelling on the bus the rest of the winter.
