Corner Brook isn’t quite a bustling metropolis, but it tends to produce some pretty good athletes, so Daniel McCarthy is aware what an honour it was to be named the city’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2013.

McCarthy was handed the hardware at the city’s Achievement in Community Excellence Awards presentation Wednesday night at the Pepsi Studio, edging out fellow nominees Michael Tibbo and Ryan Dawe.

“It’s pretty big, I guess ... it’s a good feeling,” said McCarthy. “It’s nice just to be nominated, but to win it is nice too.”

The 18-year-old son of Kevin and Joanne stars in both baseball and hockey. He said found out he was up for the award a couple of weeks ago, but other than thinking it was cool to be nominated, never put much more thought into it.

“The other two athletes were easily deserving of winning too,” he said. “I honestly didn’t expect anything out of it.”

Emily Chaisson, meanwhile, was selected out of a field of Kate Tucker, Ella Tucker and Jennifer Lombard as the winner of the Gerry Basha Female Athlete of the Year Award for the previous year.

Like McCarthy, the nomination was good enough for Chaisson, who competes in track and field, basketball and soccer.

To win, she said, was surprising.

“I didn’t really have too high of expectations,” she said. “It’s an honour.”

Awards, of course, aren’t why these young athletes get out and get active every day, but it’s certainly a nice bonus.

“Really, for me sports is just fun,” said the 18-year-old daughter of Bill and Cathy.

“I just love getting out and playing with my friends and getting involved.”
