Marble Zip Tours set off a few Canada Day fireworks Tuesday evening prior to the big show at Crow Hill.
The Marble boys scored three goals in the first period to pace the club to a 4-1 win against the North Shore Tin Men in Corner Brook Molson Men’s Ball Hockey League action from the Kinsmen Arena II.
Matt Roach opened the scoring and Ryan Patey quickly added another to give the victors an early 2-0 lead on a sultry night at the rink. Ryan Doody make it 3-0 before Kyle Murrin potted a goal with less than eight minutes to go in the first.
Veteran Scott Wayson rounded out the scoring with a marker in the second period.
Scott Walsh stood tall between the pipes to earn the win, while Peter Parsons took the loss.
With the win, Marble Zip stand at 4-1 on the season and forward Colton Kennedy told The Western Star things are rounding in to form for a club looking to join the ranks of elite teams in the league.
“We’re hoping to win,” Kennedy said. “Curling and Rocky Harbour should give us a good go too but for the most part, we’re going for the championship.”
He admitted the muggy conditions took a toll on both sides and said the key to success was pushing the pace.
“We’ve got a lot of young legs and we just try to use that and get to the net,” he said.
Meanwhile, Murrin said his team suffered from a short bench for the game, but said the team has enough youth and fitness to overcome such a challenge.
Instead, he said inexperience has been the team’s biggest obstacle since rookies litter the roster.
“We’re a new team so it’s hard to adjust to it but we’ll get it,” Murrin said. “I’m used to playing in a gym and the floor here is a lot bigger so it will just take time.”
He said the team sometimes struggles on the power play and penalty kill, something to be expected early in the season, but he has seen some cause for hope.
“We’ve got a lot of speed and I think when we get the chemistry it will all fall together,” he said.
