CORNER BROOK — The townies were simply untouchable when the dust settled at Little Jubilee Field Sunday.
The St. John’s Capitals capped off a perfect weekend in Corner Brook by downing the host Corner Brook AAA Barons 13-1 in the championship game of the 2013 Provincial Aquafina AAA Mosquito Baseball Tournament Sunday at Little Jubilee Field.
The host Barons, who posted a 2-2 record in round-robin play and tied with Grand Falls-Windsor and Mount Pearl, would have had to beat the Capitals twice since the Capitals went undefeated in round-robin play in the five-team tournament that saw the Gander Pilots finish in the cellar with an 0-4 record.
The Capitals, led by Steven Abbott with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs and two runs, pushed four runs across in the home half of the first and third innings to set the stage for the final showdown.
They also kept the momentum going with two runs in the second inning when Abbott cracked a single to score Connor Shortall and Dekon Randell Snow.
Lucas Vincent scored the Barons lone run of the contest in the fourth inning when he crossed home plate as a result of a passed ball.
The Capitals put the game out of reach with a trio of runs in the fourth inning with Abbott delivering an RBI single and Jacob Reid slapping a key two-run double.
Lucas Park was the top batsman for the Barons going 2-for-2 with a double.
Corner Brook’s round-robin record included a 14-2 win over the Gander Pilots and a 10-0 triumph over Mount Pearl. The host Barons dropped an 8-7 decision to Grand Falls-Windsor and lost 12-6 to the Capitals in their second round-robin encounter.
The Capitals’s perfect record included a 17-7 win over Mount Pearl, 18-8 triumph over Gander Pilots and 17-4 over Grand Falls-Windsor.
Jacob Reid of the Capitals got the nod as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player when individual awards were handed out at the conclusion of Sunday’s championship game. Cameron Cumby of the Capitals won the tournament batting title, Devon Murphy of the Capitals was chosen top pitcher of the tournament, Dawson Chaulk of the Barons was chosen Most Spirited Player and Best Defensive Player award honours went to Lucas Park of the Barons.
The Capitals will now represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the Atlantic AAA Mosquito (Under-11) Baseball Championship Sept. 13-15 in Richmond, P.E.I.
