CORNER BROOK Dekon Randall-Snow delivered a run-scoring double and Luke Sheriff drove in a run with a single to lead the St. John’s Capitals to a 5-2 win over Grand Falls-Windsor in the championship final at the provincial Mosquito AAA baseball tournament Sunday.
Zach Eustace and Cameron Cumby also drove in runs for the undefeated Capitals, who will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2014 Atlantic Mosquito AAA baseball championship Sept. 12-14 at Jubilee Field with Corner Brook Minor Baseball Association serving as the host centre.
The host Barons ended up in the cellar in the four-team tournament after losing all three of its round-robin games at Jubilee Field over the Labour Day weekend.
The Barons opened the tournament with a 13-1 loss to Grand Falls-Windsor, who finished in second spot by virtue of a 2-1 round-robin record.
The 0-3 mark also included a 17-7 loss at the hands of the talented Capitals and a 10-1 loss to the Mount Pearl entry.
Individual award winners in Corner Brook included most spirited player Mitchell Dinn of Grand Falls-Windsor, top pitcher Nathan Nanayakkara of St. John’s, top defensive player Kobe Burt of Grand Falls-Windsor, MVP Will Williams of St. John’s and top hitter Liam Bavis of Mount Pearl.
Things didn’t go any better for Corner Brook’s Bantam AAA squad.
The Corner Brook squad finished in last place in the five-team provincial Bantam AAA tournament with an 0-4 record in round-robin play in St. John’s over the weekend.
Corner Brook’s record included a 12-1 loss to the Conception Bay North Bulldogs in its opener Saturday morning. A 7-0 loss to Mount Pearl, a 17-7 defeat at the hands of Conception Bay South and a 15-2 drubbing to St. John’s in its final round-robin game Sunday kept the Corner Brook representative out of the playoff picture.
Meanwhile, Stephenville finished out of medal contention at the provincial Bantam AA baseball tournament in Mount Pearl over the weekend.
Stephenville had a 1-1 record in round-robin play — a 7-6 loss to St. John’s and a 7-3 win over Gander — but couldn’t advance to the final after being blanked 1-0 by Grand Falls-Windsor in crossover game early Sunday morning.
Mount Pearl won gold on home turf with a 4-3 triumph over Paradise Sunday to claim bragging rights to the provincial Bantam AA crown.
