The Junior Barons rallied back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the St. John’s Capitals 6-5 in the championship game of the provincial junior A baseball tournament Sunday at St. Pat’s Ball Park.
“They had a big 5-0 early lead, but we battled back and got the job done,” Ryan Harnett, one of five players winning the title in their last year of junior eligibility, said Sunday after the game. “It was the first time that anyone’s won besides St. John’s in last seven years so it feels amazing.”
Harnett was the starting pitcher for the Barons in the final showdown, but he got roughed up with some timely hitting and gave up five runs in three innings.
He finished the game in right field after left Matt Colbourne came into the game in relief and shut the door on the Caps with four strong innings of scoreless baseball.
“We just kept battling and everybody had good at-bats,” Harnett said. “We stuck with it, we battled through and it was an awesome comeback victory.”
